Mine versus Yours

I love things. I am not a hoarder, but have no shame in admitting that I love things. I love  nice creams or body butter that make me feel luxurious. I love pretty jewelry, nice shoes, gorgeous bags and the list goes on.

I’m also extremely stringent when it comes to using these things. As much as I love them, I also love for them to last. Kids do not understand this. My kids like my pretty things, and like finishing my pretty things.

This morning, I walked into the bathroom following my seven year old daughter’s bath to see my brand new luxurious body butter container sitting on the counter. Much to my surprise a huge chunk of it was missing! I took a deep breath, steadied myself then went to talk to her. As I walked into her bright pink room, I saw her sitting on her bed with the biggest smile on her face. Before I opened my mouth to speak, she beat me to it. “Mommy, your cream smelled sooooooo good. I couldn’t help myself. I had to put chunks of it all over my body.” Umm…(internal mommy debate – do I ask her not to touch it, or do I enjoy how happy it made her feel). I chose the latter.

And this is one of the many ways that being a parent has made me a better person.

Has being a parent made you a better person? If so, how? If not, how come?

  1. Interesting experience. Thanks for sharing. I think sometimes we place too much emphasis on material things. I’m glad you let your daughter enjoy the moment. The next step would be to teach her that we use just a tiny amount of luxurious things as they are intended to go a long way. That way she will cherish the opportunity to have just a dab, and learn to appreciate the finer things in life for what they are.
