Raisin Bread French Toast

By: Nadia Azizullah ( CanadianMomEh)

I often go grocery shopping with my kids. I could do it on my own time but I love to get them involved and excited with the foods they choose to eat.

The other day, as we were selecting our usual sliced bread in the bakery section, which is absolutely the warmest and best smelling area in the grocery store, my kids saw raisin bread. They made a scene straight out of television and exclaimed in unison, “Can we get it? Can we get it? We LOVE raisin bread and we’re gonna eat it every single day! And look mom! It’s on sale! Can we, pleeease?” I figured, with that much planning, and I’m saving 50 cents on the loaf, why not?!

Day 1, they ate it happily.
Day 2, they ate it happily.
Day 3, oh do we haaaave to? Ugh! Fine
Day 4, kids avoided all eye-contact with the remaining loaf.
Day 5, they hid the loaf to the back of the fridge behind the tub of yoghurt.

Day 6 (notably a Saturday) – well, I didn’t want the last 6 slices to go to waste! So, I made French toast out of it! And my kids loved me and said I was the best mom in the world.

To get that compliment out of your kids, you will need

1 egg
1 TBSP sugar
½ cup milk
6 slices of “stale” raisin bread

Whisk together egg, sugar and milk in a shallow dish
Dip and flip slice of bread in the batter
Lightly fry in butter/oil in till golden brown

I usually use 2 TBSP of sugar in my “normal” French toast batter with a pinch of cinnamon. Because raisin bread already has the sweet and spice flavours going on, I decided to cut back on it all together. The toast can be served with powdered sugar or maple syrup, but my kids can’t be bothered and had it fresh off the pan.

Enjoy – both the breakfast and the compliments!
