Where did you go?

Ever wonder about what your social media imprint says about you?

If you’re the occasional Facebooker who’s there more to look than to share, this isn’t as much about you (though feel free to keep reading). I’m talking about the people who are always posting pictures, articles, recipes and Instagrams on Facebook, Tweeting like there’s no tomorrow, Pinning all aspects of their life and Stumble Upon’ing everything under the sun. Ever notice when things change?

Life happens. For those living the social media highlife, your online activity creates a pattern of behavior, it says a lot about you. When some of my friends or tweeps seem to disappear off the face of the social network planet, I go hunting. More often than not, there’s more than (doesn’t) meet the eye. Their lack of social activity is sometimes indicative of a serious personal matter, an illness in the family, a secret vacation they’re taking without informing their in-laws or sometimes divorce.

I’ve noticed a pattern over the past few months when it comes to social silence and major life events. See, in real life, people are busy; work, kids, school, teaching etc…it’s relatively easy to skip social commitments, cancel events and decline invites, but for those social media butterflies, not so much. It’s something that for those passionate enough, happens at any and all times of the day, busy or not.

This isn’t a judgment, but more so a reflection. Have you noticed this happen before? Has it happened to you? Did anyone ever notice you were “missing?”

Life happens and maintaining a social image is important to many, but if you notice an online contact go missing, you may want to go hunting. Isn’t that what online friendships are for? What do you think?
