Join the #RoadToRio #WannaPlayChat on August 5 at 8pm EST
Watching the Olympics as a child was always a great source of inspiration and excitement in our household. We’d watch the game with fervour and then run outside to play whatever sport we had watched. Did you know that the Rio 2016 Games are just over a year away? August 5, 2015 marks the one year out date for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. Canada’s Olympic team is preparing for next year’s Games in Rio, and are setting their goals on how they want to train on the #RoadtoRio.
How will you and your family get ready for the 2016 Olympics?
Why not try a new summer Olympic sport or host a mini backyard Olympics?
Do you know any Canadian athletes who have participated in this sport in recent times or are on the #RoadtoRio for the first time? Track everyone’s success and ask them to make a goal for how they will improve this skill over the next year.
Post your families activity and share your experiences and what you learned.
- Join us on our #WannaPlayChat #RoadToRio Twitter Party and ask a few Canadian athletes how they are preparing for the 2016 Rio Games.
- Work on a specific skill and try to see how with practice you can improve throughout the year. Before next year’s Olympics, get your family to try again to see if they can beat their personal best.
- Do you know any Canadian athletes who have participated in this sport in recent times or are on the #RoadtoRio for the first time? Find out who they are and what they are planning for 2016.
- Set up a mini Olympics in your backyard with several ‘events’ based on summer Olympic sports – you can make up your own equipment if you don’t have it –i.e., use a softball as a shot put, use a stick as a javelin – use your imagination.
- Make sure to take pictures and keep score and next summer when Team Canada heads to the Olympics, you can get your ‘athletes’ to see if they can beat their personal bests from this year.
- Pick one of the sports from your mini Olympics and see what other Canadian’s have excelled at this sport.
I’ve shared our love of soccer and hockey with you before. Those are two sports we can never seem to get enough of in our household. We love eating together as a family and heading out to kick around a ball or play street hockey.

This sounds so exciting! Can’t believe the Olympic Games in Rio are getting so close!
We love the Olympics, but I have to say I am so happy they are not coming to Boston. Our city is way too small for that.
This sounds fun! Love the Olympics!
This sounds like a great twitter party. We enjoy watching the gymnastics and diving.
I love all of the events during the Olympics – and I’m sad I can’t watch them every summer! Hockey is so fun to watch, and I don’t get to see it often where I live.
This sounds like a great Twitter party. I love the subject!
Oh this sounds awesome. I wish I wasn’t tied up I would love to participate. Sounds like it will be a fun one!
What a great way to get hyped for the Olympics. This twitter party sounds like fun!
My daughter really got into track this past year, so I am sure she will be glued to any of the running events. Gymnastics is her second love, so we’ll definitely be catching those as well!
I’m sorry I missed the twitter party. I love the Olympics and can’t wait for them.
We watched the last couple Olympic games as a family and are looking forward to Rio 2016 as well. The opening ceremony is always a big favorite.
This sounds like fun. A great way to to get kids involved.
I love the Olympics! This post got me excited about the Rio Games next year!
We’re really excited for the Olympics too! Even the unusual sports get exciting to watch when national pride is on the line!
How fun! I know my kids would get a kick out of getting to ask questions of the athletes.
My kids have always been very active in sports. My Son has played Basketball for years. He still plays now in College.
When I was younger I was all about watching the Olympics. As I got older, television time turned into other things as you tend to have to share the TV with other members of the house.
Oh wow sounds so exciting! I cannot wait to join in!
Ah games in Rio. Now that would be fun to go see.. just so I could go to Rio. 😉
We love watching the Olympics. The contestants are amazing…..the are so dedicated to their sport.
Oh this is great, thanks for sharing. I am so not familiar with the Olympics, as far as watching them as I haven’t watched them in ages .. must try to!
