New Year’s Eve menu ideas

As another year winds down, many families prefer to spend New Year’s eve with their kids versus hiring a babysitter and spending a night out. We happen to be one of those families.

New Year’s eve was always a big deal in our house growing up. We’d spend the evening together as a family (even into our teens) with close family friends. Evenings would consist of a lit fireplace, late night buffet and a communal countdown; simple pleasures that cultivated warm memories.

I continue the same traditions with my own family. We usually have a smaller dinner on New Year’s eve followed by a late night finger food buffet spread. There are so many appetizer options available at your local grocery store that if you’re short on time or ideas, a simple stroll down the grocery store aisle can yield lots of options. If you want to get your kids involved, here are some great, simple new year’s eve menu ideas that are sure to be a hit.

Fruit kabobs

Line up bowls with similar sized pieces of cut up fruit (grapes, cantaloupe, pineapple, watermelon – depending on the season).

Set out skewers. Depending on the age of your children, they can either select the order  the fruit go in, or if they’re a little older, they can help skewer their own kabobs.

Cheese/fruit kabobs

Same method as with the fruit, but add some great cubed cheese (cheddar works great). It’s a huge hit at my house.

Pizza bar

Who doesn’t love pizza? Growing up, on NYE, my mom used to send my brother out around 11pm to pick up pizza from our favorite fusion pizza place for tandoori chicken pizza. These days, I choose to get the kids involved and make it myself. Once the ingredients are all laid out, kids can easily make their own pizzas.

Depending on how many people you will be hosting, there are so many other options. Simple hummus and pita wedges, veggies and dip or nuts and chips. What are some of your family’s favourites?

Wishing your family health, happiness and a prosperous New Year’s from CanadianMomEh.com

  1. Love these ideas. We, too, always spend NYE at home. The k8ds are older now, adults with their own plans for inviting friends over to share their NYE pot luck buffets. This year my husband and I will go out for dinner and maybe a movie before, or just Netflix and books. Happy NYE and all the best for 2018, CanadianMomEh. Love your page.

    1. Simple is best. I love our tradition of a yummy snack bar, PJ’s and lots of cuddles. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
