That tall frosty glass full of your favourite sparkly, crisp, carbonated drink that makes the back of your throat tickle with every sip. The flavour lingers on your lips as you sip your sweet nectar. Then you realize how many calories you’ve just consumed and that melancholy feeling of hydration is quickly replaced with a realization of where else you can cut calories to compensate. It’s a feeling I am familiar with, the love hate relationship with ritzy shmitzy drinks. All that changed recently when I was asked to participate in the Nestlé Pure Life Canada’s 7 day #RethinkYourDrink / #RéinventerDésaltérer challenge and test out their fabulous product line of Sparkling Carbonated Natural Spring Water.
Full disclosure here. I really enjoy drinking water. I sip from my bottle all day long. I also really enjoy the occasional soft drink or delicious mocktail. Drinking flavoured fizzy water, I was a little skeptical to start.
I poured myself a small glass of the lime flavoured Nestlé Pure Life Sparkling Water, took my first sip and my taste buds were a little confused. My family and I regularly drink water with lemon and lime in it. It’s our go to drink when we go out to dine as a family and I regularly keep a pitcher of it when company comes over or in our to go water bottles. Fizziness on the other hand I associate with pop or soda (depending on which side of the border you are when you read this). I link it with sugary drinks laden with high calorie counts. My initial cup of the lime sparkling water was tepid at best. I then tried another cup on ice. That made a bit of a difference. The next thing I noticed was that the fizziness made me feel a bit fuller when I’d take a drink and less likely to search for unnecessary snacks. By the time suppertime rolled around I felt straight up full from the bubbles. That feeling didn’t last too long as it was (pardon the pun) full of air. I did appreciate having that little helping hand when it came to avoiding the extra snacking calories.
Nestlé Waters Canada introduced Nestlé Pure Life Sparkling Carbonated Natural Spring Water in five healthy and flavourful alternatives – natural, black cherry, lemon-lime, mango-peach-pineapple and raspberry lime, with zero calories, zero sugar and zero sodium.
I’ve always been a fan of the fancy shmancy. I love nice drinks (even though I don’t consume alcohol). I love pretty glasses to hold said drinks and I love to enjoy them with a wedge of fruit. The only downside of enjoying the finer drinks is the accompanying calorie count. Those fancy drinks usually pack a caloric punch and it can definitely add up. I’d reserve the fancy drinks for nicer evenings out or for special occasions.
On the day to day however I can rarely be found without my water bottle nearby. I sip from it all day long and without fail. The days I leave my water bottle behind are the days I end up feeling dehydrated and headachy by the time the kids are getting ready for bed. While water tastes fabulous on its own, having the extra kick of flavour really helps encourage a great habit.
At the end of my seven day challenge, I became addicted to the scent and sounds of fizzy water being poured from the bottle, the tickle in my throat as I sipped away and found myself searching for its crisp bright flavour as the day wore on.
