Speaking to @BTMontreal about the Muslim woman asked to remove her hijab by #Quebec judge #QcPoli #CdnPoli

The issue of the Muslim woman asked to remove her hijab by a Quebec judge is still very much alive. Her court case is still suspended, she has yet to retrieve her vehicle which was seized and the public at large has YET to hear a full apology from the ruling judge.

This is all very disturbing. The three major political parties have spoken out about this decision but we have yet to see any concrete action on this ruling. If Judge Eliana Marengo does not issue a full public apology and reverse her decision to suspend this case it sets a very dangerous precedent that can be equated to playing with fire, in a post Bill 60 Quebec. Was Rania El-Alloul the only religious minority to ever walk into a courtroom wearing religious attire? The answer is obviously not. If she was asked to remove her hijab because the judge felt she was not suitably dressed will Judge Marengo also demand the same of any Sikh man or woman? Or any jewish man? These are the questions that need to be asked right now.

It is important to speak out against such instances however more needs to be done. In an instance which goes directly against the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and where civil liberties have been suspended (the right to be heard in a court of law and the freedom of religion) a lack of action following the incident means an acceptance of circumstances. I strongly believe that we as a society should not allow this to happen.

  1. I agree with everything you said especially that an apology from the judge is necessary. Thank you for speaking out on behalf of Muslims.
