Spreading the joy of reading with Kumon Canada #KumonReads
Some of my favourite childhood memories involved being curled up with a book behind my parent’s formal living room arm chair. I’d sneak away with a good book and a blankie for hours at a time. My parents knew where to look when it came time to pry me out. I cannot imagine a childhood without books but the truth is that more than 29 million children across North America live in low-income households. Most have limited access to age-appropriate books at home and attend schools with classrooms and programs that are often under-resourced. Kumon Canada is a national organization with math and reading centers.
They are the largest after school math and reading center in the country with locations across Canada. In fact Kumon helps millions of children succeed in 48 countries and regions on six continents. It is not only a center for children with learning challenges, many families use Kumon as a resource to help their children advance their studies and accelerate learning.
It all began with a parent’s love. Determined to help his eight-year-old son, a math teacher named Toru Kumon developed the materials and guiding principles of the Kumon Method. Now, in North America alone, more than 340,000 students are enrolled in more than 2,000 individually owned and operated centers.
The Kumon Method empowers children to learn independently, with students actively developing self-learning skills. They use worksheets to help children succeed, covering everything from counting to calculus, from phonics to Shakespeare.
To promote literacy in young children, Kumon and First Book Canada, a non-profit that provides new books to children in need, have joined forces. This joint literacy campaign will see the distribution of more than 10,000 books to schools and community based programs in Canada.
Kumon and First Book will host reading celebrations in February and March at high needs elementary schools across the country. Students will enjoy presentations from local children’s authors and illustrators and have the opportunity to read with Kumon instructors. Each student will also receive a brand new signed copy of the author’s book to take home.
-
Over 80 per cent of children who have received books through First Book Canada initiatives have reported increased reading at home and improved literacy skills.
-
Kumon Canada and First Book Canada partnered to distribute more than 10,000 new books to Canadian children in need.
-
In March, for every child enrolled in the Kumon Reading Program, $10 will be donated to First Book Canada. This will allow First Book Canada to distribute more new books to children in need.
To help spread the word about the importance of early childhood learning and the reading celebrations we are giving away one prize pack valued at $75 that includes various children’s books and school supplies. Simply enter below:
