Our generation may have been the last to have experienced life PI (Pre-Internet). Nowadays, children expect to be able to connect, play and engage online. My children are at the cusp of this age and it has me concerned. I’m forever worried they will interact with strangers online, divulge information or stumble across content not geared for them.
Fortunately as a ESET Cyber Security Pro for Mac Brand Ambassador I’ve had an opportunity to really test this software out over the last month or so. I was impressed when backing up my hard drive (something I strongly recommend everyone do) to find that ESET found and protected me against 18 infected files/viruses already housed on my hard drive. Contrary to what I’ve heard and experience with other protective software, it does not slow my Mac down in the least which is important; we all know time is money. As I mentioned in my last post, if you’re interested in purchasing your own version of ESET Cyber Security Pro, simply click here for 15% off your purchase.
Tips:
Facebook – use lists. You don’t have to share every detail of your life with your 500 Facebook friends. It’s easy to forget that the great person we shmoozed with at a bar-b-q last week that added you to Facebook is really just an acquaintance and doesn’t need to see pics of the remodeling job of your home or that special vacation you just got back from. Set up lists on your Facebook and then share accordingly. You can filter specific status updates and images to be shown to only some of your friends. Bear in mind however that if you or someone you know tags a picture, it automatically becomes visible to a greater group of people. You can control who can see your tagged photos and enable your profile so you have select what is visible on your timeline and what is hidden.ESET provides a free tool called Social Media Scanner that can scan your Facebook and Twitter accounts and sends you an email if/when you receive messages and feeds from potential threats.
YouTube – set up controls on your YouTube account if you find your child uses is frequently. If you have a YouTube app on your smartphone, it can be so easy for children to watch videos. You can set up a child user account and disable comments so your kids don’t get spammed or exposed to unnecessary comments.
Instagram – I love Instagram and so do millions of others however if you don’t need it for business purposes, keep your Instagram private, this allows you to filter who is following you and if you really want to let them see your photographs.
Smartphone safety in public. Our phones are gateways to our personal lives. The last thing we want is for our phones to get into the wrong hands. Always lock your phone when not in use and use a strong password.

I haven’t heard of ESET yet. This is wonderful. I love that it can scan Sm as Randa above mentioned. Plus Facebook lists are a brilliant idea. Thank you! With my kids aging closer to social media need to get my act together with Security. I appreciate posts and product introductions like ESET which can help me protect my family. THANK YOU!
My pleasure Tammy. I’m loving ESET. I definitely urge you to check it out and if you’re around, join our Twitter party happening October 30th from 12-1pm.
ESET sounds like something every family needs. Now with Social Media – there is just too much access to our personal lives. I love how ESET has the scanner capability. We need the reminder. Thank you!
I will have to research this further. I have been thinking it is time for better protection for our PCs. And I never think to use lists on Facebook. I know I should on Twitter. Just need to find time to make and edit the lists.
Brandy I’m loving ESET. As for lists, just start using them now and add as you go along. No need to go back right away. When you find a few minutes, you can always go back and make adjustments.

My pleasure. The timing coincides perfectly with my daughter’s increased time on the computer (for school for now…)
