Today, my boys, my dad and I ventured the #icestorm2013 and attended Disney on Ice: Princesses and Heroes at the Rogers Center in Toronto, Ontario. Although we have seen many Disney show’s in the past, this is the first time my boys had had the opportunity to see a Disney show on ice. I have fond memories of attending Disney on Ice performance when I was their age, but I wasn’t sure if it was an experience that a boy would enjoy in the same way.
Enter a world of wonder where heroes and hearts prevail. Join Ariel as she yearns to explore the world above the waves and Prince Eric breaks Ursula’s slithering spell to reclaim his one true love. See Prince Philip defeat the evil Maleficent as she transforms herself into a fire-breathing dragon in a race against time to rescue Sleeping Beauty’s Aurora. Be there to discover a whole new world with Jasmine and Aladdin. And, watch in awe as the dreams of Cinderella, Belle, Snow White, Rapunzel and Tiana all come true. High flying jumps, daring acrobatics, breathtaking skating and lovable Disney friends are just a wish away! See Disney On Ice presents Princesses & Heroes where believing is just the beginning!
From the first wave of Tinkerbell’s magical wand to the amazing firework display at the grand finale, my boys were in awe. They sat glued to their chairs the whole time, occasionally commenting “Hey Mom did you see that!”. Amazed by the lights, costumes and choreographic moves, the performance was simply breath taking.
The show begins with the perfect hosts, Mickey and Minnie to introduce the 8 love stories that we were about to witness. Each story is retold in a condensed version of the loveable Disney stories of Jasmine & Aladdin, Snow White & Prince Florian, Belle & Beast, Ariel & Eric, Aurora & Prince Phillip, Rapunzel & Flynn Rider, Tiana & Naveen. With amazing displays of athletic ability, dazzling costumes and set design, and outstanding special effects, the show appealed to children of every age. With a little bit of fairy dust, the performance begins!
Here’s a sneak peek at what we saw:
Each story followed a similar storyline: boy meets girl, the couple must overcome a challenge, then boy gets girl. With the help of secondary characters to distract us during costume changes and familiar musical interludes such as ‘Be our Guest’ and ‘Under the Sea’, it feels like the movies truly come to life on ice.
My favourite Disney Princess is Ariel, so I loved her performance the best. I found that Ariel’s skating performance, the tricks, that her and Prince Eric performed were far superior to the rest of the cast. From spinning inches off the ground to being held high in the air, their performance appeared flawless.
Villains didn’t play a huge role in this performance, with only two (Ursula and Maleficent) out of eight making an appearance. However, when they did appear, special effects and set design really enhanced the performance. I was amazed when Maleficent was transformed into a robotic fire breathing dragon. The fire and ice combination was truly unique.
Unfortunately, there was one story line that the boys and I were not familiar with; Tiana & Naveen aka the Frog Princess. The white flapper dress and the gangster performance, left us confused and bewildered. It wasn’t until the grand finale, where Tiana changed into her familiar princess outfit that we realized who she was.
I absolutely loved the ending! Not only did we get to see all of the princesses and princess in their classic costumes but we got to see them interact and perform in the most stunning routine of the show! The show concluded with a dazzling firework display that we will never forget. My boys truly enjoyed this performance and they have already asked when the show would be returning! If you have never seen a Disney On Ice performance, I highly recommend you make it a family affair!
