Charity begins at Home: Starting Them Off Young

Whew! I feel like I just blinked my eye and we’re already in December. My brand spanking new high schooler is already almost halfway through her school year and life is moving pretty fast. If you’ve been following along on the blog or my social channels, you’ll know that I recently applied for the MBNA Rewards World Elite® Mastercard®. I wrote about the variety of different rewards points I can accumulate with my MBNA Rewards World Elite® Mastercard®. Click here in case you missed it!
The biggest benefit of the card is that it’s like having five different rewards cards rolled into one. From travel to merchandise, gift cards, and even charitable donations, I have the flexibility to redeem points for the rewards I want. Out of the variety of different rewards, one of my favourites (in addition to travel, which I spoke about last month) is being able to redeem points for charitable donations with my MBNA World Elite® Mastercard®.
Teaching the kids about charity has been an integral component of parenting in our home. Our kids have been volunteering at food drives, clothing drives, and charity events since shortly after they started to walk. This past summer, Ms. B came up with the idea of selling elastic band bracelets she had made to friends, family members and neighbours –The money raised was donated to help a local refugee family our family was supporting. She loves to bake and sell homemade goodies at fundraisers, and help comb through our closets to donate to the local second-hand store. Acting locally and thinking globally is an intrinsic component of Ms. B’s education both at home and at school.
Both her old elementary and current high school participate in helping local families in need during the holidays. It’s a great way for students to get involved and make a difference locally. I love that my everyday eligible purchases using my MBNA Rewards World Elite® Mastercard® can help us help those in need. It’s important, as a parent, to model the practices we hope our kids will imitate when they’re older. We speak openly about helping others, donating to charities and giving back to those around us. It helps us bond as a family while promoting socially conscious behavior.

Charity begins at home and it just spreads! I love this so much. I’ve raised my kids to understand the importance of giving back since they were babies.
I love to hear when people are fostering these great values in kids. It is wonderful that you are raising your kids with these experiences. We are trying to do as many volunteering opportunities as possible with our kids.
I love this. We’ve been teaching our girls the importance of giving back since they were born. It’s such an important lesson.
There seems to be such a “greed is good” mentality in our society these days. It is nice to see parents making an effort to counteract that mentality with their kids. Good for you in promoting volunteerism.
I’ve never heard of this card before but it sounds really great! It’s important for me to teach my kids about charity and helping those in need out. It teaches them compassion and kindness.
That is awesome that you’re teaching your children to think of others. We were poor when I was little but as an adult I do everything I can to give back to the community. I write a pet column for a local paper to showcase homeless animals for a rescue group I work with. It feels good to give back and as an adult I can’t think of a better way to spend your spare time.
This is such an important topic. We do family community service projects once a month and my kids look forward to it.
Your kid is so cute and it seems she has a lot of fun making those charity boxes. You are right! We need to teach our children charity when they are little ones!
Charity really begins at home. We’re starting to do spring cleaning at home now and I told my daughter that we’re going to donate some of our clothes to the local-second hand store.
I love this, it’s so important to teach kids about giving back and helping out the less fortunate!
I admire you for teaching your kids about charity work. We did the same to our son and he had done lot of charity work already. Proud of him.
That’s wonderful.
I love the way you got your kids involved in helping others. I’ve tried staying away from credit cards just bc its hard getting out of debt if you end up using them and not paying it off every month.
Thank you.
