Best Crêpes in @MontTremblant #CreperieCatherine
When you think crêpes, chances are, if you’re like me, you think desert. Fruity toppings, whipped cream, syrup. A stop over at our absolute favourite crêpe place during our recent visit to Mont Tremblant opened our eyes to a totally different experience. We’ve been to Crêperie Catherine several times over the past few years and if you EVER visit Mont Tremblant you MUST stop by there for yourself. You’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you do not.
It is a small, quaint building with old school service and charm. The servers are cordial, helpful and friendly and know the menu inside out.
My family and I had never tried savory crêpes before but opted for Catherine’s suggestions on the menu which our waitress highly recommended. We figured, when in doubt, go for the owner’s suggestions. She couldn’t have been more right.
We’re a seafood family so we went for a smoked salmon crêpe, a seafood crêpe, greek salad, and an order of cheesy garlic bread. Before our visit if you had suggested to place smoked salmon and crepes on the same plate, I may have gagged at the thought. Crêperie Catherine however blew this one out of the ballpark. It was buttery and creamy, yet light. The food on our plate vanished in front of our eyes and we had to share a second serving.
The seafood crêpe. Oh, the seafood crêpe. Think succulent pieces of lobster, shrimp and scallop floating around in a light creamy sauce nestled between paper thin sheets of soft crêpe; topped with a béchamel sauce. Oh, I can still taste its deliciousness.
We washed our plates down with shirley temples and cappuccino’s because, when in Mont Tremblant, that’s what you do.
Right beside the restaurant was a small play area for the kids so while we ordered desert (c’mon we went to a crêperie! We had to order desert) the kids played.
Our waitress highly recommended the Fresh Fruit Crêpe with a side of custard cream as the strawberries were very fresh and in season; if our lunch was any indication, we figured we’d be smart to follow her advice. In addition to that we ordered a “Catherine Crunch” Crêpe with sucre à la crème (their own invention), banana, ice cream, whipped cream and “Crunch” (bits of Crispy Crunch toffee).
Our plates arrived just as our breath left us. We were speechless. The mounds of deliciousness that sat in front of us was indescribable. Pictures barely do it service. We were quite full from our wonderful lunch and really were only having desert to be polite but thirty seconds later it too was pretty much gone.
The strawberries tasted as they would if you had picked them from the farm; fresh, firm and succulent. Topped with sucre de la crème and hugged by the soft buttery crêpe.
Sucre de la crème, is one of their own personal inventions. If I had to describe its taste I’d say sweet liquid gold with a smattering of rubies. It is light, sweet but not too much and just heightens the taste of anything it touches. We had to keep reminding ourselves it is impolite to lick plates in public. Oh it was sooo good.
A couple of years ago we used to be able to buy this stuff and bring it home in sacred jars we’d guard in the back of our fridge; unfortunately they no longer offer it for sale.
Believe me when I tell you, GO to Crêperie Catherine. There is so much to do in Mont Tremblant, but if you only go to have crêpes, it will be worth your trip.
