The beauty of hockey #RGCL #GoHabsGo #Montreal

Ah, the feeling of waking up the day after watching the Habs (insert your favourite team name if you must) play live at the Bell Center. Your eyes slowly open, you stretch out and at the precise moment when you realize your throat is sore (you’ve likely lost your voice from all the screaming and cheering), you simultaneously remember that they won the previous night (against the Nashville Predators) 2-1 in overtime and a smile so big your cheeks begin to hurt, overtakes your face in one swift movement.

That is the beauty of hockey. The official sport and past time of the true north strong and free.

We had a wonderful time thanks to Rogers as we watched the Montreal Canadiens beat the Nashville Predators 2-1 in overtime. Despite having wonderful seats at the game and being right in the action, I could not help but spend the evening wondering how awesome the same plays would look from the referee’s perspective, on the bench, or on a player’s camera.

From a true hockey lover’s perspective, you want to be as close and intimate to the game as you possibly can, that’s why it’s epically awesome that Rogers GameCenter Live allows you to do just that. I know you’ve read all about it here but once you see what it actually looks like, even having incredible seats at the game will make you lust after that view from the ice when you can practically feel the ice shavings fly into your face as the players make a sharp turn. You’re tempted to turn your head away when you watch the action live from the player’s cam as they whiz around the ice, get thrown into the boards and defend your city’s honour.

I’ve blogged about what hockey means to me, and what it represents in my mind but I find as I get older I have a greater appreciation for what it means for me as a parent. It’s a beautiful sport, national pastime and activity that my entire family can get into. For many new Canadians such as my parents it represented a connection to their new home, their new land and new culture.

I love how my son at six years old talks to his friends about hockey on the bus on his way to school. He has yet to attend an NHL game but he knows the players, the lingo and has a passion for the sport. The morning after we got home from the game the kids wanted to know every single play, how many people attended and every other minute detail they could ask. It’s become a bit of a tradition at our house to watch the game as a family (unless there’s school the next morning) and scream at the television/laptop/tablet. Few things bring a family together like screaming at the television in unison, hockey is one of them!

  1. Fariha – we seriously need to talk about this whole Habs thing. I’m not sure we can be friends if it continues 😉

    1. Bahaha!!! It’s okay to admit you may like a less awesome team. Admitting it is the first step to moving forward 😉

  2. It’s always nice to have someting that your entire family can enjoy together. We don’t have as much hockey happening in Texas but I do have a few friends that are loyal hockey fans. It is a passionate sport!

  3. I’ve never been much of a hockey fan. It’s not that I don’t like it. It’s more that I’ve never been able to fully grasp the rules. My husband, on the other hand, is an avid hockey fan. He watches it for the fights the same way he watches racing for the crashes. O_O

  4. I’ve been to a hockey game one time and all I can say is that hockey fans are hardcore serious and it was super cold.

  5. I never got into hockey, even though my city does have a team. Hubby loves it though. He get’s REALLY into it. He needs a penalty box.

  6. Hockey is big here in Michigan. My father-in-law and his wife have season tickets to (not Detroit) a smaller team here in the state. I’ve gone a few times. Way more fun to see it live than it is to watch it on tv.

  7. I have never been to a hockey game, but it’s one of the few sporting games that I have always wanted to see. Now I’m even more eager to get to one! 🙂
