Liberal MPs tackle Islamophobia with event on parliament #AlwaysTogether #CdnPoli
Sometimes in life, an opportunity comes knocking at our door and we would be remiss to not grab it by the horns and run with it. This past summer, such an opportunity came knocking for me. I was invited to participate in an online petition against Islamophobia, e-411.
You probably read about it here. Heaven knows that if you’re on my Facebook page you probably participated in the INSANE debate that pursued. That’s always how I know I’m on to something. When the trolls get all fired up. Holy guacamole were there ever a lot of trolls on my Facebook page.
Fast forward 120 days and by the time the petition closed on October 6th, we sat a smidgen over 71,000 signatures, the largest online petition in Canadian history. It was a collaborative effort involving countless community groups, faith groups and spanning across the country. Canadians spoke loud and clear.
This past Monday, December 5th, MP Iqra Khalid and MP Frank Baylis hosted a reception at the Sir John A McDonald Building in Ottawa, to celebrate the contributions of Canadian Muslims and to stand against discrimination in all its forms. The event was attended by Members from different parties including the Hon. Melanie Joly, Minister of Heritage, who spoke about the strength of Canadian diversity. I was honoured to be amongst the attendees.
Earlier in the day, MP Baylis tabled petition e-411, which reinforces the fact that extremist individuals do not represent all Muslims and condemns the discrimination Canadian Muslims face in light of current events. The petition garnered 69,742 signatures, a historic first for e-petitions (this was after all the email addresses were validated).
Social Justice is a cause dear to Mr. Baylis, who believes that it is fundamental for Canadians to maintain an inclusive society. “Combatting prejudice is very close to my heart. In the history of our nation, newcomers have at times been subject to discrimination. Eventually, each of these groups becomes a respected and integral part of the Canadian story. That is all the more reason for everyone to stand up to discrimination in whatever form it takes today.”
Late last week, MP Iqra Khalid tabled Motion M-103 in the House of Commons in response to e-411 and the increase of racist and discriminatory incidents against cultural communities in Canada. The motion calls upon the House to “condemn Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination” and requests “that the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage undertake a study on how the government could develop a whole-of-government approach to reducing or eliminating systemic racism and religious discrimination including Islamophobia, in Canada.”
“I am extremely proud to put forward Motion M-103, to continue our government’s leadership on diversity issues and state on the record that there is no place for racism and religious discrimination in Canada. I am looking forward to working with all sides of the House to ensure this motion passes so we can do the work of confronting racism wherever it lies” stated Iqra Khalid, Member of Parliament for Mississauga – Erin Mills.
Other speakers included Conservative senator Salma Ataullahjan, NDP MP Rachel Blaney and Green Party leader Elizabeth May. In addition, many elected officials from all parties were in attendance.
The event was a heart warming reminder of what our nation stands for. MPs from all sides of the political spectrum spoke about protecting all Canadians, of all backgrounds and standing united as one.
What a great experience! I didn’t know about this petition. I’m glad there is people out there that are willing to work with others that are not of the same beliefs.
I absolutely love this. I do not understand people who think the actions of a few are representative of an entire culture. I’m so glad this was done.
It’s so wonderful that this motion is being put forward in the House of Commons. We are a diverse country and all races and religions need to be respected.
I couldn’t agree with you more Stacie.
I am so proud to be a Canadian. If only there was no discrimination in the world. I like knowing that our current government is moving forward and has stated on the record of where our country stands on racism and religious discrimination.
First of all I love that dress! Perfect and stylish for the event. What a great cause to stand up for and to express yourself.
Thanks Kristi!
Go Canada. I don’t understand people sometimes. It’s like blaming the entirely of a religion for the bad acts of a few. People are so afraid of what they don’t understand and if they would just educate themselves or even just talk to a Muslim rather than run away this world would be a much kinder place. You look beautiful in your dress.
Thank you Patty. I agree with you wholeheartedly!
Canada is such a great place. I wish I would have know about the petition so I could have signed it. Discrimination and hate need to be eradicated forever.
