After school snack ideas that make the grade

It is that time of the year again; time to think about going back to school! If you are like me, your mind is racing with shopping lists and schedule management tools. Before you dig too far into those shopping lists, I want you to think about one more thing – food! Food is just as important as new clothes and school supplies. It is the fuel of learning. The right foods can help your child be more attentive in class and that alone is a great reason to take notice of what they are going to eat this school year. Breakfast, lunch, dinner AND after school snacks need to be strategically planned to help your child through the day.

What should I do about after school snacks?

The basics of any fantastic after school snack are simple: peanut butter, fruit, or vegetables. If you have these three ingredients in your home right now, you have the makings of a fantastic after school snack for your children. An excellent snack idea is green apples and peanut butter. Sometimes I add a drizzle of honey, other times I go straight for the Nutella. My 20 After School Snacks list has four great recipes with peanut butter in it! Don’t forget to add Healthy Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies, Peanut Butter Oatmeal Balls, Peanut Butter & Cherry Bites, and Ants on a Log to your favorites list!

Yogurt is another favorite, especially for the kids. I love it because it is so great for their digestive system. What else can provide your child with that much digestive help and taste so delicious? Yogurt can be enjoyed by itself in a bowl, frozen, tossed into a smoothie, or as the center of a pineapple sunflower! The options for yogurt as an after school snack are endless.

My final favourite group of after school snacks (that I think make the grade) are snacks that combine nuts, fruit, and/or grains. The bites that are inspired by Lara Bars are truly delicious. They can give your child an energy boost to help them complete afternoon homework, sports practice, and chores. These after school snacks are: Pumpkin Cranberry Muffins, Moon Balls – Healthy Kids Snack, and Chocolate Cherry Energy Bites.
