A New Year. A New Canada. #cdnpoli

We are into the second week of 2016. Welcome back. It’s been quiet around here. We had some great, much needed down time over the holidays then started the year off with an awful cold. I’ve taken advantage of the kids being back at school to focus a little more on myself and my health. It’s something I have come to appreciate more with every passing year.

A lot of people are talking about goals, resolutions, special focus words and their aspirations for the year ahead. I say, power to them. I also say however that it’s not for me. Not this year. This year I want to take stock of the past year. I want to learn from it and use it to fuel me to achieve bigger, better and greater things for my loved ones and the communities around me.

You have invested in me by following this blog, by reading my posts, by leaving your comments (thank you), by sharing my posts and by sending me heartfelt emails, tweets, Facebook messages and DM’s in response to the words that I shared with you.

2015 was not an easy year. There were many ups and downs on the political front; locally, nationally and internationally. It was the year of a massive election for Canada, one that I tweeted my heart out over. So much was on the line for the future of our glorious nation. The world’s eyes were on us as as we chose collectively to choose a Prime Minister who understands that our nation’s pride is in not merely tolerating our differences, but thriving because of them. A leader who has returned the reputation of our country back into the limelight. A leader who has taken bold steps with respect to issues that matter to us not only nationally but to all citizens of the world globally; climate change being at the forefront of the actions he undertook shortly after become Prime Minister, at the Paris Climate Change conference in November 2015. Also a leader who took the issue of missing aboriginal women that was swept under the political rug by the previous administrations and did something about it by vowing a renewal of his relationship with aboriginals. He also released the final report from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission on what happened to indigenous children who were physically and sexually abused in government boarding schools.

There are more people displaced around the world than at any time since the Second World War, and Syria alone is the largest refugee crisis in a generation. In 2015, the world has become divided amongst those who help and those who turn their backs. It has become an immense source of pride for so many Canadians that we have a leader who not only announced we would be accepting 25,000 Syrian refugees by March 2016 but went one step further by greeting the first wave of refugees personally at the airport. These are the issues that mattered most to me in 2015. This fiercely proud Canadian mom had a heart bursting with pride in our nation.

Above all else, 2015 was the year that etched these glorious words into my heart:

A Canadian. Is a Canadian. Is a Canadian.
