March is Nutrition Month

As a health practitioner I am usually very familiar with dedicated monthly campaigns that promote health. This year, I was surprised to learn that February also included campaigns to raise awareness about eating disorders. Being Canadian, the mental health campaign Bell Let’s Talk is still fresh in our minds. National Eating Disorders Awareness Campaign (NEDAC) took place between February 3rd and February 9th. It was sandwiched between the Bell campaign and Nutrition Month, coincidence?

I hope to see more advertisements and marketing schemes in March promoting Nutrition Month, a very important topic to discuss. Nutrition Month was created by Dietitians of Canada and this year, dietitians will be doing tours of supermarkets and presenting on how to shop to provide healthier food at home. The slogan for this year’s campaign is called “Best Food Forward: Plan Shop Cook Enjoy!”

Help us make Nutrition Month just as much of a success as all the other campaigns by promoting better eating habits and nutrition in your home. Here are a few basic things you can do to get started today:

1. Revisit your grocery list – are you buying enough vegetables and fruits?
2. What are the “junk foods” you or your kids can’t live without? Try cutting out one item this month and re-evaluate in April if you can really live without it! Is there a healthier alternative?
3. Try a new recipe every week that is guaranteed to add more fibre to your diet!
4. Make water your new best friend! If you don’t carry a water bottle around already, make it equivalent to your keys or wallet! Don’t leave the house without one!

What will you  be doing for Nutrition Month?
